Are you tired of those ugly destructive stains on your roof? Or maybe you just want to prevent your house from becoming stained and unattractive.
Roof stains are caused by mold, algae, fungus, lichen, and moss. Lichen & moss are rampant in the Northwest part of the US, but are still often seen in the South and Southeast. Mold, algae, and fungus are prevalent in the South & Southeast where the humidity provides the prefect habitat for them to grow on asphalt shingles, wood shake shingles, and clay tile shingles.
Mold & algae usually grow on the north side of roofs as well as shaded areas, and if not removed they have the ability to shave years (8 to 10 years) off the life of your roof. Wind carries the spores from one rooftop to another eventually affecting all nearby roofs. These spores land on the roof and secrete a material that adheres them firmly to the shingle surface. They then thrive on the limestone in asphalt, composite, and fiberglass shingles. With this food source plus heat and humidity from the environment, mold and algae quickly spread to the entire roof and eventually down the house which can affect indoor living.
What’s feeding on your roof?
The black streaks commonly found on roofs are referred to as a very hardy “black algae” (cyanobacteria) called Gloeocapsa Magma which feeds on the limestone filler in shingles causing premature aging, water retention, & general deterioration of the shingle and it’s granules if left untreated. This leads to unnecessary water leaks and early roof replacement.
Shingle granules are vital to the health of your roof and home because they deflect UV rays and heat away from your roof surface. Mold & algae cause all roof types to become darker and non reflective which attracts and retains more heat thus increases your electricity bills by 20 to 25%.
Over the past few years, this particular algae strain has become hardier and so has been able to migrate to less humid environments than it has in the past. In areas where it traditionally has been found, the staining is showing up earlier and is more severe settling on a greater number of roofs.
Algae also encourages moss and other damaging biological growth, such as lichen, to grow by creating a moist environment and by providing nutrients. Lichen and algae actually work together to stay alive; fungal spores must meet with a compatible algal partner before a functional lichen can form. Lichen is a very destructive plant that attacks your roof. When growing on mineral surfaces, lichens slowly decompose their substrate by chemically degrading the minerals, contributing to the process of weathering by which rocks are gradually turned into soil. Now imagine how lichens are affecting the minerals in your asphalt and clay shingles. Lichen often leave bare spots and holes in the shingles they inhabit.
The thick moss growth with its shallow root system keeps the roofing material damp for extended periods of time and this moisture promotes wood rot and erodes the asphalt in shingles. Moss grows up into the gullets of the shingles and along edges causing them to lift and make the roof more prone to wind damage and leaks.
A Safe cost effective alternative to replacing your roof.
Our roof cleaning application eliminates mold, algae, fungus, lichens, and moss from roofs, gutters, siding, stucco, & many other surfaces; and it is safe on your roof. We use a non pressure cleaning method and a specially formulated biodegradable product that removes algae & mold completely. Although we are a pressure washing company, we never use a pressure washer or any type of brushing to clean roofs. We also apply a protective coating to your roof that works to prevent mold, fungus, and algae regrowth for longer periods of time-normally 2 years. Many homes owners are unaware that their roof can be cleaned, and they replace their roofs unnecessarily. This is a very costly oversight. Nearly 50% of roofs were replaced pointlessly due to cosmetic appearance.
A new roof should last 20 to 30 years, but you’ll have to replace it much sooner if the algae isn’t removed & kept away. Considering the cost of a new roof, it just makes sense to keep your shingles clean and functional for a fraction of the cost. In addition to the initial cleaning, we offer an annual preventative maintenance treatment that will allow your roof life to last as the manufactured intended.
